This simple hot smoked salmon salad was something I loved at the start of my third GD pregnancy. Made with store-bought hot smoked salmon fillets, paired with ripe avocado, cucumber, black olives and plenty of green salad leaves, tossed in a simple sweet lemon dressing. It works particularly well with cooked buttery new potatoes, rice or couscous.

Please note: this recipe is made with hot smoked salmon which is safe to be eaten during pregnancy. If you prefer, you can use a cooked salmon fillet, or tinned salmon instead.

I use these hot smoked salmon from Aldi

Salmon is an oily fish. During pregnancy, it is advised that no more than two portions of oily fish are consumed per week.

  • 1 hot smoked salmon fillet
  • ½ medium avocado pitted and diced
  • 50 grams black olives
  • ¼ medium cucumber sliced
  • 1 handful salad leaves

For the lemon dressing

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice and some zest if using a fresh lemon
  • 1 tbsp sugar free syrup or agave nectar
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • a good pinch salt and ground black pepper to taste


  • Add the ingredients for the lemon dressing into a jar or bowl and mix or shake until emulsified. Season with salt & pepper to taste
  • Pour the dressing over the salad leaves, avocado and cucumber and lightly toss to coat
  • Serve the salad, add olives and break the hot smoked salmon fillet into flakes across the top (you can heat the salmon if you like by wrapping in tinfoil and baking in the oven for 15 minutes) then finish with a squeeze of lemon juice
  • Serve with a small serving of starchy carbs
