GD means that we are at a higher risk of having placenta issues, although other factors can also cause placenta issues such as other types of diabetes, hypertension, anaemia, blood clotting disorders, smoking & drug abuse during pregnancy

Many terms may be used for gestational diabetes placenta issues such as placenta deterioration, placenta insufficiency, placenta failure, placenta dysfunction, premature ageing, calcification & impaired placenta function
⠀
GD placenta issues can occur when there are problems with blood flow through the placenta. The earlier problems are detected in the pregnancy, the more severe the complications can be for the baby
⠀
Complications linked to gestational diabetes placenta issues:-
▶️IUGR (Intrauterine growth restriction)
▶️SGA (baby grows small for gestational age)
▶️Premature labour
▶️Pre-eclampsia
▶️risk of oxygen deprivation at birth for baby
▶️low body temp at birth for baby
▶️low blood sugar levels at birth for baby
▶️stillbirth

There can be no symptoms of placenta issues at all, but the good thing with gestational diabetes is that we are monitored regularly at hospital with additional growth scans & checks. If you are not offered additional growth & doppler scans you should call your diabetes team or mw to discuss this

Symptoms that some may experience include:-
▶️changes in baby’s movements
▶️a sudden drop in blood glucose levels (to very low levels <3.0mmol/L)
▶️frequent hypos in insulin controlled mothers
▶️levels not raising after eating
▶️lack of or slowed growth of baby
⠀
If you suspect placenta deterioration then you should contact a medical professional immediately
⠀
Most will be asked to go to hospital for assessment & depending on the gestation, if following monitoring, dopplers or scans there is any cause of concern you may be admitted for care or assessed daily. A plan of care will be discussed which may involve you having steroid injections to help mature your baby’s lungs & you may be advised to have an earlier birth

Whilst 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱, there may be certain circumstances for some which indicate that it is best for the baby to be delivered early. I am a prime example of this, where I experienced early placenta deterioration, so it was best for my babies to be delivered early (𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘸𝘦𝘣𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘦)

Where an induction is 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱, here are some tips on having a positive induction with GD:
⠀
1️⃣ Understanding, informed consent & making plans:
•Understand what the process of induction will look like for 𝘆𝗼𝘂 in your hospital. What methods will be used, in what order. What if they are not successful?
•Ask questions & research so that you can make informed decisions & consent to your induction
•Make a clear birth plan
⠀
2️⃣ Comfy clothes & environment
•Pack comfy clothes that you can happily move around in
•𝘈𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘥 𝘱𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘭 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘥𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦!
•Adjust the lighting & add personal touches to make the space more relaxing for you
⠀
3️⃣ Pack plenty of GD-friendly snacks & drinks
•Be prepared that the hospital food may be things that cause you to have high blood sugar levels (even if they state suitable for diabetes)
•Pack plenty of snacks & drinks so that you can maintain controlled blood sugar levels see our hospital bag list

4️⃣ Move, move, move
•Once the induction process has started, it is best to be as mobile and active as possible
•𝘚𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘢 𝘣𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴
•Try walking up & down stairs sideways, long walks & boucing on a ball
⠀
5️⃣ Be prepared for the potential long haul
•Be prepared that inducing labour may take a long time
•Take plenty of things to entertain you eg. crafts, books, magazines, puzzles, phone/tablet/laptop with charger etc.
Can I eat store-bought quiche with GD? YES! Store Can I eat store-bought quiche with GD? YES!

Store-bought quiche has white flour short crust pastry on the base (even store-bought ‘crustless quiches’ have it on the bottom 🤨) so treat the pastry as your main starchy carb on the plate and pair it with extra protein and natural fats alongside a big serving of green salad or leafy vegetables and you shouldn’t see any crazy spikes in blood sugar levels. If you get on really well with a meal like this, then you can add some additional carbs to the side next time you have it if you wish

Paired with 2 of my hens boiled eggs, more cheese and salad of romaine lettuce, baby spinach, rocket, 1 medium tomato, cucumber, sweety drop red peppers, pickled red onion with a quick homemade salad dressing of extra virgin olive oil, white vinegar, French mustard, lemon, S&P 👌🏻

This Frozen Yogurt Bark recipe is so simple, quick and easy to make, plus you can tweak it to meet your own dietary needs and preferences.

It’s the perfect sweet treat to snack on and even better in warmer weather when you want something cool to nibble on which won’t cause your blood glucose levels to soar.

If you don’t like to add sweetener to your diet, then no need to, just get sweetness from low GI summer berries instead. Can’t eat nuts, then don’t add them. Love nuts, use lots and swirls of peanut butter! Can’t or don’t eat dairy, use a dairy-free alternative

The flavours of Frozen Yogurt Bark shown in the images are:
🍓 🥥 Berries & Coconut (strawberry, raspberry, blueberry & coconut flakes)
🫐🍓🥜🌱Fresh Berries, Nut & Seed Mix (berries, almonds, chia seeds & fresh mint)

Other flavour ideas:-
🥝🥥Tropical: 1 x passionfruit, 1 x kiwi, peeled and thinly sliced, 1 x lime (zest & juice), desiccated coconut & coconut flakes
🍊🍋Citrus: zest of lemon & orange, half an orange segmented, juice of a lemon and half an orange
🥥Lime & Coconut: coconut yogurt with zest & juice of 1 lime, toasted desiccated coconut to top
🍫🥜Choc Nut: Peanuts (as many as you like) & 30g dark choc melted and drizzled
🍒🍫Black Forest Swirl: handful fresh or frozen cherries with 30g dark choc chips
🥜🌰Granola Crunch: mixed chopped nuts, seeds – mixed with sugar-free syrup to taste sprinkled over the top in clusters
🍌🥜Banana & Peanut butter: 1 small greener banana, finely sliced, 3 tbsp melted peanut butter to drizzle and a handful of peanuts
🍰Vanilla Cheesecake Crunch: 2 vanilla pods (split lengthways and seeds removed), 150ml real dairy double cream or Elmlea Plant-Based Double Cream added to the yogurt and whipped in, topped with 2 crushed digestive biscuits

Sweet Apple Nachos 🍏 1 Granny Smith apple core Sweet Apple Nachos

🍏 1 Granny Smith apple cored, then sliced with the skin on
🥜 a good scoop and drizzle of no added sugar peanut or almond butter
🫘 a good sprinkle of chopped almonds, pumpkin seeds & dried quinoa 
🍫 1 tablespoon of choc chips

Make a plate and get stuck in! This is #GDFoodPairing (by adding extra protein & fats to the apple, it slows down the absorption of sugar from the carbs in the apple & chocolate which helps achieve lower and more stabilised blood glucose)

🐟 May 2022 there was an outbreak of listeria from smoked salmon, therefore it is now advised that smoked salmon is cooked before eating if you are pregnant 

When posting food ideas & recipes I always recommend foods which are safe to be eaten in pregnancy - this is according to current guidance for the UK (please note: guidance may be different in other countries)

Here are foods that are commonly questioned whether they are safe to be consumed in pregnancy but you may not realise:-
⠀
1. Stilton; it is pasteurised & therefore safe to eat (SOFT BLUE cheeses such as Danish Blue, Gorgonzola & Roquefort should be avoided unless cooked until steaming hot, this is due to the higher moisture content of these type of soft blue cheeses which can harbour listeria)
⠀
2. Baked Camembert; although soft white cheeses with a white coating (such as Camembert, Brie, Chèvre) should be avoided uncooked, they are safe to be eaten if cooked until steaming hot
⠀
3. Soft Cream Cheese; like Philadelphia, ricotta, and cheeses like cottage cheese, mozzarella, feta, paneer, halloumi & cheese spreads are pasteurised & therefore safe to eat
⠀
4. Runny, partially cooked or raw egg yolks & foods made with them such as fresh mayonnaise; these are safe to eat if they are British Red Lion stamped eggs
⠀
5. Peperami; original & snack-size Peperami are pasteurised therefore are safe to eat. Note: the mini snack packs containing cheese are not pasteurised so should be avoided unless frozen. Salamis & other cured meats eg Parma ham, chorizo etc can be eaten if frozen before consumption or if they are cooked

6. Black Pudding; it should be cooked thoroughly

7. Prepacked Cooked meats eg. ham, corned beef, turkey; these are cooked & packaged & are safe to eat in the UK
⠀
8. Cooked shellfish such as prawns, mussels, crab, lobster, clams & scallops including cold precooked prawns
⠀
9. Peanuts & other nuts; you should only avoid eating nuts in pregnancy if you have a nut allergy

Packed with heart healthy lentils, this lentil dhal maybe a popular choice for many. However a curry like this served with a big helping of plain boiled rice & roti breads is very high in carbs and doesn’t contain enough protein & fat to help pair them

With meals like this it’s important to increase the protein & fat. If you don’t eat meat then try adding additional protein in the form of tofu, Quorn, or other soya based meat alternatives. Pulses such as lentils & chickpeas do contain protein but not enough to help pair and they also contain carbs themselves which adds to the problem
⠀
Fat helps slow down the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream and also slows gastric emptying. This means that eating fat alongside better carbs and some protein means that blood glucose levels do not spike so high or so rapidly. This is ‘GD Food Pairing’
⠀
Therefore this low carb tikka masala recipe which contains more fat & protein means it is a lower carb curry option. Then serve alongside cauliflower rice and a wholemeal roti or lower carb wrap instead of additional carbs in rice AND bread. If you prefer rice to bread, opt for brown rice or brown basmati and keep the serving small. A good starting point is 3 heaped tablespoons of cooked rice. If you tolerate this well then it can be increased the next time you have the meal

I thought it would be helpful for many of you, to I thought it would be helpful for many of you, to share a comparison post on a slimming world (SW) style meal

The reason for doing this is that SW is a very popular diet that many follow. It is also a diet which is supported by the RCM so is deemed as suitable in pregnancy. SW also have support leaflets for people with diabetes and so some may feel it is suitable for gestational diabetes
⠀
Whilst SW can be followed with GD, it can be very hard to restrict the carbs enough and pair foods with only having limited dairy (Heathy Extra A) and a certain amount of syns to use a day. SW is a fairly high carb diet with many free foods being high in carbs (such as potatoes, pasta, rice & fruit)

I’m sharing this as a previous SW member (I’ve followed the diet several times, but no longer choose to follow this style of diet)

For a meal comparison, I’ve opted for breakfast as I know it’s a filling meal that many enjoy. It can also be a fab choice for GD, but with a few tweaks by lowering the carbs & increasing the fat (remember: it is the fat that helps slow down the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream, slows gastric emptying, meaning we achieve lower & more stabilised blood glucose levels)

Whilst the Heck chicken sausages are lower in carbs, so a great choice with GD, they are also much lower in fat, therefore for the GD version I have switched to high meat content pork sausages instead

Similarly the lean bacon medallions are great on a GD diet as they are low carb, but I’ve opted for streaky bacon on the GD version to increase the natural fats (and because it’s so much tastier 😉)

*Before I get shot down, I know that I have used some syns on my SW breakfast which are also carbs & could be left off the plate, but many may also add potatoes chopped & fried in fry light for a syn free version that still contains the carbs. I know that some may also add the spinach to the SW plate too, however this does not alter the carbs, fat or syns (please bear in mind I also had to use what I had available in my house for the pics)

A lunch like this just needs some tweaking to reduce the amount of carbs being eaten at one time and it could also benefit from a big increase in natural fats

Fats?! Yep, FATS. Fat helps slow down the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream and also slows gastric emptying. This means that eating fat alongside better carbs and some protein means that blood glucose levels do not spike so high or so rapidly. This is ‘GD Food Pairing’

Whilst this is a healthy breakfast, it’s unfortunately a lot of carbs for us to process when we have diabetes

A breakfast like this is notoriously hard to tolerate, but with some tweaking to reduce the amount of carbs being eaten at one time and an increase in natural fats, this will help make a similar breakfast much easier to tolerate and maintain lower and more stabilised blood glucose levels
