Now moved from the GD UK membership recipes into the FREE recipes, a really popular main meal recipe... my chilli con carne

Not only have I moved this dish over to the free recipes, but I have also added a new recipe which uses any leftover chilli!... Enchiladas 🌶🌶🌶

You’ll notice there’s no refried beans in my enchiladas as there are already kidney beans, tortilla wraps and tomatoes in this recipe, so this helps keep the carb amounts slightly lower. But the recipe, as always, has been made so that the ingredients are well-paired with plenty of protein and natural fats

As long as you follow the recipe and ensure that beef mince is replaced with a high protein content vegan meat alternative, it should be well tolerated by most
⠀
The enchiladas recipe also contains a comparison chart of different tortilla wraps to help you find the lowest carb ones possible local to you

With the weather turning you may be wanting a nice warm breakfast to fill you up and kick start your day

If you tolerate quinoa well, then you may want to try out quinoa porridge
⠀
This isn’t a quick recipe (it takes around 15-20 mins to cook on the hob) but can be a good warm filling sweet breakfast when you fancy something different
⠀
Porridge made with oats is tolerated by some diabetic mums, but for those who struggle this may be worth trying as an alternative
⠀
This is a higher carb breakfast than some if my other recipes, but it is worth trying as long as you pair it well with plenty of milk, cream (plant based alternatives work well for this too if you are dairy free or vegan), nuts, seeds and nut butters

This quinoa porridge is al dente giving it a subtle crunch, has a very mild nutty type flavour and can be made as thick and creamy as you like

Gestational Diabetes Diet does not mean going hungry!

Starving yourself or going long periods of time without eating is not going to help your blood glucose levels, in fact, it can have the opposite effect!
⠀
When blood glucose levels fall, the liver dumps stored glucose into the bloodstream to raise levels back up. With diabetes we can struggle to control our levels back to ‘normal levels’ which can result in the exact thing we are trying to avoid, high levels!
⠀
Eating little & often is the best way during pregnancy to keep our blood glucose levels lowered & stabilised. I recommend 3 meals & 3 snacks a day, but if you feel you need more, THEN HAVE MORE! Please don’t go hungry!
⠀
The only times it’s not advisable to eat is within your postprandial testing window (the time following your food before testing eg. 1 hour after eating) and during any times where you have been asked for fasting levels eg. After going to bed and waking in the morning
⠀
If you have been asked to test at 2hrs post meals but find the 2hr testing window too long, ask to change to 1hr testing instead. It should be noted that not one of the National guidelines in England, Wales, Scotland & Ireland recommend 2hr testing!
⠀
The rest of the time, if you are hungry then EAT! This may be easier said than done, but all it takes is a bit of understanding over which foods impact your blood glucose levels and planning ahead
⠀
Carbs are going to raise your blood glucose levels, so if you eat carbs they should be unrefined complex carbs which will release slower into the bloodstream in small servings & well-paired with protein & fat
⠀
Proteins raise levels but with a much lesser effect and over a much longer period of time, therefore protein can be eaten much more freely
⠀
Fats have little impact on levels and can be eaten freely, but it is best to opt for natural fats
⠀
Use low GI fruit/vegetables/salad to help fill you up alongside plenty of proteins & fats to help pair the carbs found in them
⠀
Planning your food is key and can really make a difference to being caught out, feeling hungry and grabbing things that may not be the best choices, or result in you becoming ‘hangry’

How low is too low? ⠀ We are usually given targe

How low is too low?
⠀
We are usually given targets which we are aiming to be below and some of us are given a range for levels to be between, but what happens when blood glucose levels (BGLs) drop low?
⠀
You may have lots of knowledge about diabetes and BGLs, or this may be a completely new experience for you. Either way you may not have experience or knowledge about low levels in pregnancy
⠀
Many believe that they should reach for the jelly babies or Lucozade at the first sign of low levels, but this may not be necessary and can actually have a detrimental impact on your control of your BGLs and gestational diabetes
⠀
When talking about low levels, we generally mean BGLs below 4.0mmol/L (72mg/dL) although some NHS Trusts will advise levels below 3.5mmol/L
⠀
With extremely low BGLs (<2.0mmol/L) it is best to retest to check it is an accurate reading and then contact your Maternity Assessment Unit for advice straight away
⠀
With levels between 2.0-3.9mmol/L this is where the advice differs depending on how your diabetes is managed:

The big difference here is whether you are on insulin, or Glibenclamide, or not
⠀
The reason being that those who are diet controlled, or those who take Metformin will be able to self-correct the low level (although they may feel a bit rotten) This is known as a ‘false hypo’. To help recover from a false hypo faster, the best thing to do is eat a GD suitable snack
⠀
When BGLs drop too low, the liver releases stored glucose into the bloodstream to raise BGLs back up, therefore reaching for jelly babies etc. alongside the liver releasing stored glucose can result in a big spike in BGLs and cause a rollercoaster effect
⠀
However, for those on insulin, it can counteract the dumped glucose from the liver and continue to pull BGLs down to dangerously low levels. For these women, low levels are classed as a ‘hypo’ and should be treated with something high in sugar such as jelly babies, Lucozade, or my personal go-to, a carton of fruit juice (OJ, apple juice or pineapple juice) retest after 15mins & eat a snack

It’s that time of year where pregnant women are encouraged to be vaccinated with the flu vaccine.

This post is NOT about the pros and cons of immunisation, I’ll leave to you to make an informed decision regarding that (please note, any comments regarding pros and cons of immunisation/vaccination will be deleted).

This post is to give information to mothers who are going for flu and/or whooping cough vaccinations and are wondering if it will have an impact on their blood sugar levels.
⠀
The flu & whooping cough injections themselves should not effect your blood glucose levels, but you may get a slightly raised temperature as a side effect (which in itself could cause slightly higher blood sugar levels).
⠀
The flu vaccine is normally available from September until around January or February each year. It is free for all pregnant women in the UK.
⠀

And here it is!... My GD UK Membership recipe for flour free Chocolate Roulade

Rich chocolate cake, thick whipped fresh cream and fresh raspberries for little sweet kicks throughout. This flour free chocolate roulade makes for lovely sweet treat and is great as a centerpiece for a special dinner or celebrations!
⠀
This cake is going to crack, so be prepared and don’t panic if it happens. A true roulade is at it’s best when it has the lovely deep cracks sprinkled with sweetness! And don’t panic about the rolling – JUST GO FOR IT! Mine’s far from perfect, but I promise you it tastes absolutely delicious!

New FREE recipe for you all to enjoy!

Here’s my Chocolate Tart!

There’s a couple of options with this recipe; you can make plain sweet pastry cases like these, or chocolate pastry cases. You can make smooth chocolate filling, change the dark chocolate flavour to things like orange or mint and if you would like a more praline type filling you can do what I did and add blitzed hazelnuts too!

This recipe is nut free unless you choose to add additional nuts into the filling

It is low carb, contains no added sugars, is gluten free, wheat free (because swapping sugar for sweetener in sweet recipes doesn’t make a cake/dessert low carb enough so my recipes do not contain plain or self-raising flour) and it is vegetarian too

The raspberries are optional but work fantastically 👌🏻 and due to the ingredients used these tarts are self-paired even with adding the raspberries on top! This means the tarts do not need to be paired with more protein and/or fat to help them be tolerated, although a spot of OPPO ice cream or a dash of cream works well 😜

I’ve had to stop following a lot of med professionals accounts on Instagram as it’s really starting to anger me that they are using GDM as a condition to make money (on top of their paid jobs!)

When I launched my GD UK membership for recipes & meal plans I got a lot of abuse over charging GD women for information. But as a stay-at-home Mum I needed a way to fund a professional website & my work involved (it’s just me, not a team of people working behind the scenes or group of researchers). BUT it has always been the extra convenience that is in the membership; extra recipes & meals plans at a very small cost of £5/£7 a month with a min 1 month fee (not the amounts that many of these webinars are charging)

All the information you NEED to know to follow a great GD diet & a wealth of other evidence-based information from diagnosis through to birth & beyond is absolutely FREE for anyone to use. I would never charge for that info as it should be readily available for free to anyone that needs it!

I get so many emails from private dietitians/nutritionists who want to collaborate with me but this sadly is not for the benefit of anyone but making money for themselves & many of which want to alter some of the info I give, being professionals & ‘knowing more than me’

Using my leftover spag bol mince, with sliced par-boiled potatoes and the cheese sauce I use in my cauliflower cheese recipe, this is a great way of using up leftovers but getting a comforting meal, made from scratch that will give nice stabilised blood glucose levels
⠀
Remember this is a low carb diet, not keto. We’re not aiming to completely eliminate carbs from the diet, but reduce them and pair them well. This gives us energy and avoids us going into high levels of ketosis which some Doctors will raise concerns over.

If you really struggle with potato then it can be subbed for other root vegetables instead

This is my spag bol recipe leftovers, chilled, then layered with more cheese and re-cooked in the oven to change it into a ‘pasta bake’

You may think why bother with the extra step of making it into a pasta bake, but there is more than the benefit of the crispy topping of cheese to this...

If you struggle to tolerate pasta, it may not be the best carb for you (as we all tolerate some carbs better than others). However if you do tolerate it but see levels increasing even when the pasta is well-paired with protein & fats, you can try this hack!

I think it’s very easy to get hung up on your blood glucose levels during a diabetic pregnancy and feel that you will be judged on the results you are getting

Monitoring blood glucose is something that we can do for our own and our baby’s benefit. It is a fantastic tool that both us as mothers can use and the medical professionals can use to gage how well our insulin resistance is going and use this info to formulate part of our care plans in order to achieve the best possible results
⠀
Blood glucose levels provide vital information in order for us to manage this condition the best we can
⠀
The amount of times I’ve heard mothers in my Facebook group saying that they are worried or scared they will be told off by their diabetes team for their levels is quite shocking 😢
⠀
No one should be made to feel bad about their blood glucose levels and there needs to be a good understanding between the mother and the medical professional/s around the hard work and effort that goes into continually monitoring blood glucose levels, the constant planning and eating foods/drinks and then the outcomes of these results
⠀
Whilst some mothers may need lots of guidance around making the best choices and the risks of uncontrolled GD explained in a understanding yet informative way, they should also not feel threatened, judged or scared from these meetings
⠀
🅨🅞🅤🅡 🅑🅛🅞🅞🅓 🅖🅛🅤🅒🅞🅢🅔 🅛🅔🅥🅔🅛🅢 🅓🅞 🅝🅞🅣 🅓🅔🅕🅘🅝🅔 🅨🅞🅤!

I know it feels like life revolves around trying to achieve these target numbers but the results are purely information to help make the best plan
⠀
Monitor your levels for YOU and YOUR BABY, but even if they are way off the targets you’ve been set, it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong or you are a bad mama!!
⠀
Just like myself in all 3 of my GD pregnancies, you might just need more help from meds/insulin or doses continually tweaked to keep chasing those numbers AND THAT’S OK 👍🏻

I get, I honestly do get it. After having 3 GD pre

I get, I honestly do get it. After having 3 GD pregnancies myself (2 of those from the very start of pregnancy) and a fear of needles, the last thing I WANT to do is poke myself with a lancet to test my blood glucose levels 7+ times a day!

BUT I also know that it’s actually lucky that GD is a condition that I can have an element of power over, when there’s so many other conditions that you get absolutely no control over

GD is a condition I can track and get a good idea of what’s happening in my body and to my baby, which means I can make the necessary changes to diet and meds alongside my medical professionals so that I get the best outcomes for my baby

Burying your head in the sand, purposely missing tests, or taking time off from testing is such a wasted opportunity to take back a small amount of control over this rubbish diagnosis and will do nothing to help manage GD

Would you allow your child to cross a road without telling them the importance of checking for traffic first?

Why put your child at risk and carry on oblivious?
⠀
Take back the control - we don’t have much, but we do have this!
⠀
(And I know for some of you this is a major thing to deal with. I’m not good with needles at all, but I have been able to get through it. If you need help because you can’t cope with testing blood glucose levels then please don’t suffer in silence. Speak to your diabetes team who should be able to help & support you with this)
