Can I eat chocolate with gestational diabetes? ⠀ Can I eat chocolate with gestational diabetes?
⠀
A. YES!
⠀
A small amount of chocolate can still be enjoyed without causing spikes in blood glucose levels but you it’s about being sensible with the type of chocolate, keeping the portion small and as always, ‘pairing’ with extra protein & natural fats will always help reduce the spike in levels
⠀
You may hear lots of people with GD mention Dairy Milk Freddos being a good choice. But this only stems back to a Freddo being a plain milk chocolate without any extra added carbs such as caramel, honeycomb, biscuit, candy etc. which spike BGLs rapidly AND because Freddos come individually wrapped. This helps with eating a small portion of chocolate at a time
⠀
There are TONS of other choices which can be enjoyed, so here are 10 chocolate examples which come individually wrapped:
1. Kinder mini bar (12.5g) = 6.7g carbs
2. Cadbury’s Treat sized buttons (14.4g) = 8.2g carbs
3. Aldi Dairyfine mini delights bar (18.2g) = 9g carbs
4. Cadbury’s Freddo (18g) = 10g carbs
5. Kinder Bueno 1 stick (21.5g) = 10.6g carbs
6. Aldi Dairyfine Spirals Hazelnut (21g) = 11g carbs
7. Kinder big kids bar (21g) = 11.2g carbs
8. Flake (20g multipack size) = 12g carbs
9. Kitkat (2 finger) = 12.9g carbs
10. Aldi Choceur bars(40g) = 20-21g carbs
⠀
The darker the chocolate, the higher the cocoa content & the less sugar it has. However, the darker the chocolate, the more bitter & less sweet it is
⠀
⚠️ Avoid sugar free, low/reduced sugar chocolate that contain artificial sweeteners which can cause gastric upset and tend to be overpriced. If you’re going to have some choc you might as well have some nice chocolate in a small amount, well- paired which won’t cause bloating, cramps & nasty gastric side effects 💩 💨 😖🧻🚽 (if you know, you KNOW! 😳)
⠀
Q.What can I pair chocolate with?
A. It’s up to you! It doesn’t have to be in the same mouthful. You can eat the protein/fats before eating the chocolate to help pair it
⠀
Try these foods for pairing (some lend themselves well to eating alongside choc, others not so much!)
1. Nuts
2. Seeds
3. Nut/seed butter
4. Cream & yogurt (dairy/coconut/soya)
5. Cheese
6. Meat
7. Fish
8. Eggs
9. Avocado
10. Olives

Roll up your sleeves, pop an apron on & get your G Roll up your sleeves, pop an apron on & get your GD bake on!
⠀
This recipe is the reason the majority of people join my recipe subscription. It’s still the most popular recipe on the website & what’s great is that there are loads of options to cater to everyone’s needs & tastes! And it’s sooo easy, even my kids can make these 👍🏽
⠀
There are the following versions of my GD Low-Carb Brownies:
1. The ORIGINAL brownies (this is my original recipe after trying TONS of low carb brownies during my pregnancies. The result of loads of playing around to get the BEST fudgey low carb sugar free brownies possible)
2. Vegan brownies (my original recipe tweaked to make vegan)
3. Dairy Free brownies (my original recipe tweaked to remove the dairy)
4. Nut free brownies (a completely different recipe to make the best nut free low carb brownie)
⠀
Then there’s the option to add flavours & toppings of your choice to switch it up, like my sugar free caramel, peanut butter, chia seed jam, orange, or mint!
⠀
Why spend a fortune on baked low carb goods (£10.99 & £4.50 postage for 8 measly low carb brownies😲) when for £5.00 you could join GD UK bronze recipe subscription & get this recipe plus TONS of others which you can use time & time again! So many people use the recipes post-birth too as they love them so much! It is a recipe subscription but you can cancel straight away if you would only like access for 1 month 😍
⠀
The ingredients don’t need to be expensive, I get mine in places like Aldi & Home Bargains. The sweetener is the most expensive ingredient & I buy this in bulk online as it can be used for so many things!
⠀
By purchasing GD UK recipe subscription you are supporting the GD UK website & my work. As a one woman business, it’s this optional subscription for some recipes like these brownies that pays for the costs of running a professional website without annoying adverts & pop ups. It also provides a small wage for me to continue doing what I love, researching gestational diabetes & sharing that information to help support mums & carers of those with GDM

It may be hard to think of gestational diabetes di It may be hard to think of gestational diabetes diagnosis as a blessing when you’re fed up with pricking your finger so many times a day, when your life revolves around what to eat, when to eat and then watching that glucose monitor count down to give you a reading which could make or break your day.
⠀
It may be hard to think of gestational diabetes diagnosis as a blessing when you’re walking into the hospital for yet ANOTHER appointment.

It may be hard to think of gestational diabetes diagnosis as a blessing when you’re sitting at the table where everyone is telling you to “go on, just have a some, it’s only a little bite and it won’t hurt you” while they all sit any enjoy theirs.
⠀
It may be hard to think of gestational diabetes diagnosis as a blessing when you’re told you need to start injecting yourself with daily insulin injections when you HATE needles.
⠀
It may be hard to think of gestational diabetes diagnosis as a blessing when you’re told that you can’t have the birth you wanted and had planned.
⠀
It may be hard to think of gestational diabetes diagnosis as a blessing when you’re told that you and your baby now have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
⠀
BUT, being diagnosed with gestational diabetes diagnosis IS a blessing. It’s a blessing as it gives us the opportunity to monitor and take care of our babies. The chance to make a difference before the high blood sugar levels take away our blessing, our ultimate goal; a healthy baby.

I know it’s hard, but at least GD is something that we CAN do something about

My ham and broccoli pasta bake is loved by the who My ham and broccoli pasta bake is loved by the whole family. Whole wheat penne pasta, covered in a creamy savoury sauce, big chunks of ham, broccoli florets, a few fresh garden peas topped with bubbling crispy cheese, yum!

We’re having this tonight but with leftover roast chicken added too! 😋
⠀
This ham and broccoli pasta bake is a great way to use up leftovers. I tend to make this for a warm and filling Monday night dinner using leftover roast gammon ham pieces, but you can easily swap the ham for leftover roast chicken, or with sliced cooked sandwich ham. It also works great with chunks of salmon or tuna
⠀
Reheating cooked pasta helps to lower the glycemic index and may make pasta dishes more tolerable. Therefore if you struggle to tolerate pasta, try making a dish like this, allow it cool, refrigerate it overnight and then try a small portion reheated to see if you can tolerate it better!

This is #GDFoodPairing for #GestationalDiabetes part of my #8GoldenRules for a great #GestationalDiabetesDiet
Gestational Diabetes diagnosis means thinking abou Gestational Diabetes diagnosis means thinking about your diet and making healthy choices, but sometimes what we are used to thinking of as ‘healthy’ choices can be just as bad for our blood sugar levels as the things that we are avoiding like sweets & cake
⠀
Here is a great example… Grapes 🍇 in this warm weather, frozen grapes may seem like a lovely sweet healthy treat, but although they have nutritional benefits from the vitamins & minerals they contain and the fibre in their skin, they will spike blood sugar levels as they are PACKED with high amounts of sugar
⠀
Grapes and dried fruit like sultanas, raisins & dates are so notorious at spiking blood sugar levels, we call them ‘sugar bullets’ 💥
⠀
A much better alternative are berries & cherries 🍓🫐🍒
⠀
Berries & cherries are much lower in natural sugars. But even when eating these lower-carb fruits we should keep the amount small and add some protein & natural fats to help pair them. This is #GDFoodPairing part of the #8GoldenRules to a good #GestationalDiabetesDiet
This is healthy eating for #GestationalDiabetes
