We often see debates in my Facebook group around M We often see debates in my Facebook group around Mums needing to take meds/insulin feeling like they are being judged, bashed or a failure because they haven’t managed to control their levels with diet alone 😢
⠀
This subject comes up every so often & it’s hard to pin point where these feelings of judgement or blame stem from 🧐
⠀
Is it that Mums who are diet-controlled are bashing meds & the use of them & see med/insulin-controlled Mums as weak or failures?
⠀
Is it coming from med professionals telling women that “if you FAIL to control with diet, you will need to start meds”
⠀
Or is it self-guilt & blame that a Mum feels that she SHOULD be able to do this with diet alone because other people can?
⠀
I write this post as a mother who created GD UK, who came up with the #8GoldenRules & #GDFoodPairing - the best GD diet I know to help gain control of BG levels, who has researched the condition & impact diet has on GD for many years. BUT also as a mother who needed insulin in ALL 3 of my pregnancies because I couldn’t control my levels with diet alone. Heck, I was on insulin early in my 1st pregnancy, within weeks of my 2nd pregnancy & within a few days of falling pregnant with my 3rd, as no matter what I did my levels sky rocketed 🚀
⠀
Some of us, no matter what we do, even if we just live on leafy green salad can experience high blood glucose levels & WILL need the extra help of Metformin &/or insulin. It doesn’t mean we didn’t try hard enough. Some don’t even get a chance to diet-control. No one WANTS to take meds in pregnancy, we would all love to stay diet-controlled, but unfortunately many of us just NEED the extra help & we do this alongside good diet choices
⠀
On the flip side, many Mums work really hard with diet control & it IS enough for them. It is luck of the draw as to how insulin resistant you become. But that doesn’t mean a diet-controlled Mum doesn’t deserve to shout from the rooftops how proud she is that she is managing to control her levels with diet control alone. By being proud she still deserves to say “I MANAGED to stay diet-controlled” because it IS hard work and that Mum deserves recognition for that

The last low carb pie recipe and this should hopefully put a smile on many faces, it really should be a membership recipe as it’s truly awesome but I know many ladies are struggling money wise at the mo, so this one is a gift from me to you 💛

⠀
When you want a show stopper dessert but need it to be GD friendly, low carb, sugar free, nut free and gluten free then why not try Jo’s Lemon Meringue Pie!
⠀
I promise that your guests will not have a clue that this is anything different from a sugar laden lemon meringue and Jo’s Lemon Meringue Pie will become a recipe that everyone will want to share.
⠀
A coconut flour tart case, filled with smooth decadent zingy lemon curd and topped with sweet meringue.
⠀
Now this dessert is a bit fiddly compared to most of my other recipes as there are multiple stages to making a lemon meringue pie, but if you follow the recipe step by step and use the ingredients exactly as stated, you’ll be fine.
⠀
Check out the recipe @ www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/jos-lemon-meringue-pie/

Nearly at the end of your pregnancy, surely a few Nearly at the end of your pregnancy, surely a few treats won’t hurt right at the end?
⠀
What is the potential damage late on in diabetic pregnancy to the baby? It’s not like they can grow much more is it? 🤷🏻‍♀️
⠀
This is a big reminder that #gestationaldiabetes is NOT just about big babies. There is so much more to GDM than the possibility of having a larger than average baby
⠀
Eating high carb/sugar treats means that our babies have to increase their own insulin production to process this glucose which we cannot process ourselves being diabetic. It is this over-production of insulin in the baby which actually causes excessive growth, not the baby digesting sugar, as many believe.

Once the baby has been born they can continue to over-produce insulin even though they are no longer being fed high glucose from the mother’s placenta. They may then struggle to normalise their insulin production resulting in low blood glucose levels and hypoglycaemia (where the baby’s blood glucose levels drop dangerously low)
⠀
Because of this, uncontrollable blood glucose levels in mother (outside 4.0-7.0mmol/L) can result in the mother requiring a variable rate insulin infusion AKA a ‘sliding scale’ during labour www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/sliding-scale/
⠀
The best defence we have is keep blood glucose levels as normal and stable as possible, right up until the END!
⠀
So the answer is, it’s just not worth the risk. Have treats, but stick to GD friendly ones and pack the high carb/sugar treats in your hospital bag for once baby has arrived
⠀
If you need ideas for GD friendly hospital bag snacks, then take a look at my hospital bag list www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/hospital-bag-list/

This low carb Scottish Steak Pie is based on a traditional Scottish steak pie that I was introduced to after meeting my husband and enjoying steak pie bought from the butchers to eat on New Years Day with his family, which is a tradition for many Scots.
⠀
Rich thick beef gravy and succulent pieces of melt-in-the-mouth beef, there is no better beef pie than a Scottish steak pie. Traditionally it is topped with a puff pastry lid, but to create a low carb version I have used 2 sheets of filo pastry instead to give that buttery crisp pastry, but with much less carbs than puff pastry. This recipe is packed with beef so it is a great pairing tool for the carbs in the filo pastry and any vegetable accompaniments.
⠀
The key to the rich gravy sauce in this recipe is time and gentle cooking. It can be cooked in a slow cooker to give an even richer taste and be more cost effective using cheaper cuts of diced beef.

This cheats fish pie is a lovely creamy, deliciously cheesy fish pie, suitable for the whole family and a great recipe for wee ones!
⠀
It’s a cheats fish pie as I’ve used a couple of store bought items to make this a faster and easier dish to prepare for busy families.
⠀
Here are the ‘cheats’ that I use in this recipe:
⠀
🐟ASDA fresh fish pie mix which is mixture of skinless and boneless cod, smoked Alaska pollock and salmon pieces (340g)
🍤Tesco Bay Fishmongers King Prawns (150g)
🧀Philadelphia full fat Soft Cheese with Garlic & Herbs (170g)
🐟Knorr fish stock cube
🥔Aunt Bessie’s Frozen Mashed Potato (650g)
⠀
Mashed potato is not low carb, but by adding plenty of butter and cheese (you can even add some double cream if you wish) this helps to pair the carbs in the potato.
⠀
If you do not tolerate mashed potato well, you could swap to use thin sliced skin-on new potatoes, sweet potato mash, or another vegetable mash (cauliflower, celeriac, or root vegetable mash). You could also substitute the potato and use a sheet of filo pastry instead.
⠀

You can of course swap the chicken for Quorn pieces if you’d like to make this pie vegetarian or omit the bacon/ham if you don’t eat pork.

I’ve been wanting to make some more low carb bis I’ve been wanting to make some more low carb biscuit recipes for the website for some time, but I have a big problem with low carb biscuits... they are always too soft
⠀
My favourite cookies that I bake with my boys are nice & crisp on the outside and slightly gooey in the middle, but these cookies use a TON of sugar (in fact they use 2 types of sugar) plus white flour and so I really wanted to find an alternative and one that could be shared with you ladies with gestational diabetes too #WinWin
⠀
After lots of playing around with different ingredients, used in different amounts and different ways, I have finally created 2 new cookie recipes which I’m happy with and all 3 boys approved of (always a good sign) 👍🏻🍪
⠀
Whilst they aren’t quite as crisp as my home baked Millie’s cookies dupes, these are the best I’ve found so far! They will definitely help with those sugar & carb cravings without spiking blood glucose
⠀
So I ask you, which ones do you think you’d prefer?
⠀
1. Choc chip cookies
OR
2. Triple choc & nut cookies

(Sorry if you are nut free, as both these recipes use nuts)

So many people out there are charging for webinars So many people out there are charging for webinars and courses to learn about gestational diabetes 😡 From £20 - hundreds of $
⠀
I’ve had to stop following a lot of med professionals accounts on Instagram as it’s really starting to anger me that they are using GDM as a condition to make money (on top of their PAID jobs!)
⠀
When I launched my GD UK membership for extra recipes & meal plans I got a lot of abuse over ‘charging GD women for information’. But as a stay-at-home Mum I needed a way to fund a professional website & my work involved (it’s just me, not a team of people working behind the scenes or group of researchers and I have to cover the costs involved). BUT it has always been the extra convenience that is in the membership; EXTRA recipes & meals plans at a small cost of £5/£7 a month with a min 1 month fee (not the amounts that many of these webinars are charging for BASIC knowledge)
⠀
All the information you NEED to know to follow a great GD diet & a wealth of other evidence-based information from diagnosis through to birth & beyond is absolutely FREE for anyone to use. I would never charge for that info as it should be readily available for free to anyone that needs it!
⠀
I get so many emails from private dietitians/nutritionists who want to collaborate with me but this sadly is not for the benefit of anyone but making money for themselves & many of which want to alter some of the info I give, being professionals & ‘knowing more than me’
⠀
Please note: I will not now nor will I ever sell out to a private dietitian/nutritionist/company who wants to change my information & charge GD or diabetic pregnant mothers for the pleasure of providing basic dietary info. This is not what Gestational Diabetes UK is about. It is about helping and supporting as many pregnant women with diabetes as possible for FREE so that they can achieve the best possible outcomes alongside their NHS teams 🙌🏼
⠀
⚠️So be mindful what you pay & sign up for ladies. If you have the cash to splash, then that’s completely up to you. But NO ONE should have to pay for this basic information on how to get the BEST possible pregnancy & birth with GD!
